Power Ballad Review: One of the Year’s Most Enjoyable Surprises
Paul Rudd in Power Ballad (Lionsgate)
There’s something refreshing about a film that understands exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver. Power Ballad takes a premise that could have easily fallen into predictable territory and instead turns it into a surprisingly heartfelt, energetic, and genuinely entertaining ride. What initially sounds like an odd combination on paper ultimately becomes the film’s greatest strength.
When Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny transforms one of Rick’s songs into the hit that revives his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves — even if it risks everything he cares about.
The pairing of Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas works far better than expected. Rudd brings the charm and comedic timing audiences have come to expect from him, while Jonas delivers a performance that feels surprisingly confident and natural. But that’s not all I can say about Paul Rudd, this actually feels like one of the best roles he has ever done. There’s more to him here than we usually see, and in hind sight, it kind of makes me feel like Rudd has been underutilized in many previous roles. He is a phenomenal dramatic performer and I would love to see more roles like this that balances a variety of emotions. It’s an unusual pairing with Rudd and Jonas on paper, but Jonas proves himself more than capable alongside Rudd. While it may not come as a complete surprise given how many musicians successfully transition into acting, Jonas still manages to exceed expectations here. The chemistry between the two carries much of the film and gives even the quieter moments a strong emotional core. Rather than relying entirely on comedy, the film allows its characters room to breathe, creating several memorable interactions that feel authentic and engaging.

What makes the film stand out most is how it balances familiarity with freshness. While the overall story structure may feel recognizable, the execution keeps it from ever becoming stale. The film carries a strong sense of rhythm and personality, consistently finding new ways to keep the audience invested, and that is where writer/director John Carney shines most. It understands its tone, shifting seamlessly between comedy, emotion, and music-driven energy without ever losing momentum.
The music choices throughout the film are another major highlight. Instead of simply using songs as background noise, the soundtrack becomes an essential part of the experience. Every track feels carefully selected to enhance the emotion, humor, or atmosphere of a scene. The film clearly has a deep appreciation for music culture, and that passion translates well on screen. Several sequences are elevated entirely by the soundtrack choices, giving the film a vibrant and memorable identity.
Visually, the film maintains a fun and polished style that matches its upbeat tone. While it never tries to become overly flashy, it consistently feels lively and cinematic. Combined with strong pacing and solid performances across the board, the result is a film that remains entertaining from beginning to end. Power Ballad may not completely reinvent the genre, but it doesn’t need to. Its charm, strong performances, emotional sincerity, and excellent music choices make it one of the more enjoyable surprises of the year. It’s the kind of film that simply works because it fully commits to its energy and heart. Definitely worth a watch!
