Ice Cream Man Review: Bloody, Bonkers, and Best Enjoyed with Your Brain Turned Off

Ice Cream Man is the kind of movie that knows exactly what it wants to be, and whether that works for you will depend entirely on your willingness to meet it on its own terms. Clocking in at just 86 minutes, the film barrels through a barrage of outrageous violence, absurd comedy (your mileage may vary), and over-the-top horror without ever pretending to be anything deeper. If you're expecting layered characters, meaningful storytelling, or emotional investment, you're looking in the wrong theater.

Instead, Ice Cream Man embraces pure chaos. The film leans fully into its campy premise, delivering one outrageous sequence after another with an infectious level of confidence. The story itself is about as simple as the film's approach: an idyllic suburban town descends into madness when a mysterious ice cream man begins serving frozen treats that transform children into homicidal maniacs. From there, the movie wastes little time unleashing a barrage of over-the-top mayhem. Its greatest strength is undoubtedly its kill scenes, which are creative, bloody, and often so exaggerated that they become hilarious in their own right. Horror fans looking for inventive practical effects, outrageous gore, and memorable death sequences will find plenty to enjoy.

Unfortunately, that's also where the film begins and ends. Beyond the spectacle of its violence, there isn't much substance holding everything together. The narrative is thin, the characters are largely forgettable, and the script rarely (and I mean pretty much never) gives the audience a reason to care about what happens between the next elaborate death sequence. Fans of Eli Roth's previous work will at least enjoy spotting a few familiar faces, including talent from his recent slasher Thanksgiving, but even their presence isn't enough to elevate the material beyond its surface-level entertainment. In fact, I'd go a step further and say some of these actors seem to genuinely enjoy getting absolutely mauled on screen—you'll know exactly what I mean when you see it. The humor is intentionally ridiculous, though it often comes at the expense of tension or suspense, making the film feel less like a cohesive story and more like a collection of loosely connected sketches stitched together by increasingly outrageous kills.

However, that isn't necessarily a flaw if you understand the experience you're signing up for. Ice Cream Man isn't aiming to be the next prestige horror film or psychological thriller. It's a midnight movie designed for audiences who appreciate outrageous concepts, gallons of fake blood, and an unapologetically silly sense of humor. Watching it requires checking your expectations, and perhaps a few brain cells, at the door. Once you do, it's easier to appreciate the film for the gleefully ridiculous ride it wants to provide.

While it won't be remembered for its storytelling or performances, Ice Cream Man succeeds at delivering exactly what its premise promises: a fast-paced, blood-soaked horror comedy that refuses to take itself seriously. It won't satisfy viewers looking for depth, but for fans of campy, over-the-top genre fare, there's enough entertainment packed into its brief runtime to make the trip worthwhile. Sometimes horror doesn't need to be profound—it just needs to be fun, and Ice Cream Man certainly commits to that philosophy from beginning to end.
